The European Union proposed 1 billion euros in emergency aid to Ukraine to support the cash needs of the war-torn country.
Sources with knowledge of the matter, Bloomberg says, claim that Germany has appeared reluctant about a generous financial package for Ukraine. Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, said that the first part of an assistance plan would be an “immediate response to the most pressing needs of the moment”.
“This first part of the package addresses the most urgent needs, the EU will continue to provide relief to Ukraine, and in the long term will support its reconstruction as a democratic and prosperous country.”
EU officials prepared the 1 billion euro fallback option after the commission failed to secure Berlin’s blessing for a package that included 8.8 billion euros in loans. Apart from concerns about the funding structure, Germany is seeking grants rather than loans, the sources said. The Pentagon announced that it will send additional weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, worth 820 million dollars.
The fourteenth package of armaments for Ukrainian forces includes two air defense systems, more ammunition for the Himars precision-guided missile launchers that the US began shipping in June, about 150,000 rounds of 155mm artillery ammunition, as well as four additional radars against artillery attacks. In this way, the value of the total allocations to Ukraine from the US has reached 6.9 billion dollars, since the beginning of the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
