The Federal Cabinet has approved the continuation of German participation in the KFOR mission in Kosovo for another year. The federal parliament, the Bundestag, will consider the request in the coming weeks.
The mandate envisages without changes that up to 400 German soldiers be sent to Kosovo. Currently, according to information from the Federal Government, there are about 70 members of the German Armed Forces, Bundeswehr.
The Bundeswehr’s 400 soldiers, however, have previously been decided not to shrink, so that the Bundeswehr can react quickly and flexibly.
Since Kosovo’s declaration of independence in 2008, KFOR in Kosovo has focused on monitoring the development of professional, democratic and multiethnic security structures.
The presence of international troops serves the long-term stabilization of Kosovo’s northern border region. Cooperation with international organizations and local actors is very important in this context.
KFOR in Kosovo has been engaged since 1999 under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244. On June 11, 1999, the German Bundestag decided for the first time the German participation in the KFOR Force in Kosovo./DW
