The International Criminal Court has sent a team of 42 investigators, forensic experts and support staff to Ukraine to gather evidence of attacks that could constitute war crimes.
This is the largest deployment ever on the ground of our experts said prosecutor Karim Khan’s office in a statement. Forensic experts will also work with Ukrainian authorities to gather evidence.
“Now more than ever we have to show the law in action. “It is essential that we show survivors and victims’ families that international law is important to their experience… in order to bring them some comfort through the justice process.” stated in the court statement.
Prosecutor Khan announced an investigation into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity just four days after the February 24 Russian invasion.
He called Ukraine a “crime scene” as he visited the city of Bucha in April, where numerous bodies of civilians were found after the withdrawal of the Russians.
