Wordle was created by Josh Wardle a Welsh programmer living in New York who played with the words of his last name to give the game its name. This game is a bit similar to a popular game in the United States due to the television show Lingo, which aired in the late 1980s.
The game works by selecting a word that has only five letters. While the persons who join this game must select the appropriate letters to find the word. It is played online, for free and without registration, but only once a day.
Wardle explained that he created the game for his girlfriend, who like him is a fan of crossword puzzles and word-related games in general. It was initially born as an idea to spend time during the coronavirus pandemic, but later turned into an obsession in his family’s WhatsApp group.
In mid-October, he decided to share it with other people online.
In recent days the game is so viral that a person decided to create an app and upload it to the Apple App Store, thus immediately achieving great success, but also attracting numerous criticisms for stealing the original idea of the game from Wardle.
The latter has stated that the success of his game depends a lot on the fact that it is fun, requires little time and can only be played once a day.
In addition to fun word games, Wordle has integrated many mathematicians and people who love this kind of puzzle. One Twitter user shared an algorithm that would help users find the selected word in just a few gestures, while another suggested writing the word “adieu” first to find or remove one or more of its four vowels.
Tim Gowers, a professor of mathematics at Cambridge University, said it’s a good idea to start with two words that contain frequently used letters but have nothing in common.
