The Supreme Court in the United States may overturn the decision that allows abortion, according to a draft opinion that has been leaked by this institution, reports the daily Politico.
According to her, the judge, Samuel Alito, said in the document that the decision of 1973 is wrong.
If this document is verified, it would constitute an unprecedented case in the modern history of this court.
Judges are expected to announce the decision in the case in early July.
Neither the Supreme Court nor the White House has commented on this leak.
“It is time to return this abortion issue to the elected representatives of the state,” the document reportedly said.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer – both Democrats – have issued a statement following the leak.
“If the reporting is correct, the Supreme Court will cause the greatest restriction of human rights in the last 50 years,” the statement said.
Protesters have also gathered outside the Supreme Court to express their anger over reports on the issue.
The 1973 ruling enabled women in the U.S. to have an absolute right to abortion in the first three months of pregnancy and limited rights in the second trimester.
Women in their 20s are believed to have the most abortions in the US – in 2019 about 57 percent of abortions were performed in this age group.
Americans of color perform the most abortions – 27 per 1,000 women aged 15-44.
