The situation with the pandemic at the Winter Olympics is “under expected control”, despite the increase in positive cases, said an official from the Office of Pandemic Control and Prevention at the Games held in China.
The Organizing Committee of the Winter Olympics “Beijing 2022”, since January 23 has reported over 200 cases of COVID-19 of participants who have come to the Games. Infected persons are isolated and separated from organizational staff, including athletes.
“As more people enter China, cases of COVID-19 imports are on the rise,” said Huang Chun, deputy director general of the Office of Pandemic Control and Prevention.
Huang said the increase in cases was also a result of more efficient detection used by border officials.
Many athletes have been barred from participating in the Olympic Games, which will be held from 4 to 20 February, as they have tested positive upon arrival at airports. Meanwhile, many others have been placed in isolation, as they have tested positive but have not shown symptoms.
China is applying strict measures against COVID-19, including frequent testing, in order to prevent outbreaks of the virus.
