In the context of discussions about the differentiated treatment of children with high intelligence, the collective memory comes to our aid. Over 30 years ago, a 10-year-old boy stood out for his math skills. Lizander Saraçi became a national phenomenon at that time.
Lizander Saraçi: Of course, I was aware in those years, because I was 9 and a half years old, when I appeared on the show “With you” on public television, but it’s not that I was ever very interested in the fame part. Then we are such a small country, that here the word fame loses a lot of meaning. Until the second and third grade, I worked mainly with my child in mathematics. I believe that from the third or fourth grade I started to dissociate and I had a special teacher until the eighth grade. I didn’t do the Mathematics lesson at school, then I did the rest of the subjects at school. My father stood out to me, as he also studied exact sciences, Physics and Engineering. I was 10 and a half years old in 1987 when I went to France for an intelligence assessment and was accompanied by a math teacher, a family friend. Family members were not allowed, as it was a year after the departure of violinist Tedi Papavrami with the whole family. My intelligence quotient (IQ) was 160, but what does that matter. A high school in Nice, France, offered me a scholarship for a year, so that I could get used to the French system. Because of the communist regime I was not allowed to go then, but with the changes of the 90s, I went to Nice and started my studies there, with a scholarship that included everything paid for the first year.
It was a school where there were differentiated programs for children with higher than average intelligence. I learned other subjects such as history, geography, French with the 8th and 9th grade program, while mathematics was differentiated, I did the final year program, i.e. matriculation. I pursued higher studies in mathematics, and the master’s degree in applied mathematics in markets, scholarship.
IQ, i.e. intelligence is not related to wealth. There are intelligent people who died poor, just as there are people of normal intelligence who died very rich. I have been living in Tirana for 12 years. The most painful question I have been asked all this time is: Why did you come back? Asking a man why you returned to your home, to your country, is very sad.
I was a child who didn’t just sit on books, but played and had fun with the company. The deal with my father was 3 difficult math exercises, and a hand of cards. I became famous not for art as a song or a musical instrument, but for mathematics, which is the last thing people would care about. On the contrary, many of my peers accuse me and tell me that because of you, our parents have blackened our lives by telling us, that’s why you don’t become like Lysander, but my parents did the same to me, in terms of social subjects. My death has been the drafting and recitation of poems for Enver.
For children with high intelligence, I advise to have differentiated programs, so that they do not lose their concentration, to make learning as attractive and challenging as possible, so that they are engaged all the time and do not fall into the trap of laziness, because things seem so simple, you lose attention even to things that are not simpler.
