It seems that the French proposal is considered the best solution by the international community for opening the way for negotiations between North Macedonia and Albania with the EU. In addition to the European bloc, the United States also considers that Skopje should accept Eliza’s proposal.
The American ambassador there, Kate Marie Byrnes, through an open letter addressed to the citizens of North Macedonia, called for the green light to be given to this draft, recalling that “the people and the local institutions have the strong support of the USA in the right journey EU, for making a decision, which, however difficult it may be, is important for the future of the country”.
“EU membership will make your country stronger. Joining an international organization, much less participating in those processes, is hard work and comes with difficult decisions… But accepting this proposal means you will finally have a seat at the membership negotiating table.
It puts EU member states, many of which are your close partners and allies, in a room with you… Once you start negotiations, you will have more tools and, thanks to the new methodology, earlier access to funds and EU programs, which you can use to realize your goals and build the future you want for yourself and your children,” the American ambassador wrote.
Byrnes also underlined, like President Emmanuel Macron before her, that the new proposal does not infringe on the Macedonian language and identity and that its content is more technical. The text recognizes the Macedonian language and identity and protects them from further challenges.
It may not be perfect, the proposal does what is necessary: it protects your core interests and initiates a dynamic negotiation and review process,” was her comment.
