Macedonian protesters have broken the windows of the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Skopje, on the fourth day of protests against the French proposal.
The protest, which started in front of the government building, then continued to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the protesters threw pyrotechnics and hard objects, breaking the front windows of the ministry.
The protesters called on the Foreign Minister, Bujar Osmani, to “teach Macedonian history”.
In the protestors’ banners, the name of Bujar Osmani was deformed to Bugar Osmani.
A masked group of protesters have broken the police cordon and are throwing hard objects, pyrotechnics, toilet paper and eggs at them.
Police forces are concentrated at the entrance of the Assembly of North Macedonia.
This is the fourth day that a protest is being held in Skopje with the motto “Ultimatum? No, thank you”, against the French proposal through which it is intended to overcome the differences between Skopje and official Sofia about the past and the issue of Macedonian identity.
They have demanded the resignation of the Macedonian Prime Minister, Dimitar Kovacevski and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bujar Osman.
Protesters are demanding that the government authority in North Macedonia reject the European Union’s proposal, known as the French proposal, for the start of membership negotiations.
According to them, the French “Bulgarianize” North Macedonia and do not know the Macedonian language or history.
During the protest, the Macedonian police said that four policemen were injured.
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Oliver Spasovski, has called for peaceful and democratic protests, underlining that citizens have the right to protest and no one dares to deny this right.
“Violence against those who take care of the order – the Macedonian police, against the institutions will not bring anything. Yesterday we had an attempt to escalate the situation, we have 4 injured policemen”, Oliver Spasovski, Minister of Internal Affairs, wrote on his Facebook profile.
During the protest the day before, a group of citizens led by the leader of the ‘Left’ party, Dimitar Aapsiev, who is known for his nationalist views, broke the fence placed in front of the Government and threw stones at the Police and the government building. toilet paper, plastic bottles, water cannons, pyrotechnics and eggs.
The Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Dimitar Kovacevski, said during the day that violent protests do not belong to a NATO member country and a country that claims membership in the European Union.
“Yes, there are people protesting wearing masks, who hit the police. Yes, we have injured policemen. anyone can protest about any issue. But the intention to go to protests with masks is intolerable for a state that passed April 27. This cannot happen to us. Last night you saw that the police withdrew. The proposal offered by the European Union is being discussed here,” said the Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Dimitar Kovacevski.
Otherwise, through the French proposal which arrived in North Macedonia on June 30, it is intended to overcome the differences between Skopje and Sofia on the issue of language and historical past, thereby unlocking the integration process.
For two years now, Bulgaria, through its veto, has blocked the beginning of negotiations for the membership of North Macedonia, thereby also removing the obstacle for Albania towards the integration process in the European Union.
