The former industries of monism, after the collapse of the system were abandoned and left in oblivion along with the raw material. As a result, we inherited millions of tons of hazardous waste from that system, which have not yet been cleaned.
Referring to the data of the hazardous waste management strategy approved in 2020, it is a total of 241,270 kg of hazardous waste only from the warehouses of laboratories of economic enterprises. More specifically, in the warehouses of the company for the supply of mines located in Balëz are stored about 15 thousand kg of cyanide and other chemicals.
In the former energy plant there are 300 kg of chemicals for use in the laboratory, in the ruins of the Laç complex there are 60 kg of chemicals, in the laboratory of the copper plant in Rubik there are 70 kg of chemicals. Nitrogen in Fier contains 93,300 kg of formic acid, vanadium pentoxide, potassium carbonate, while in the warehouses of the regional branch Tropoja there are 18,300 kg of chemicals. The central geological laboratory has 5,000 kg of chemicals stored, in the regional branch Rubik there are 280 kg of chemicals, while in that of Puka there are 230 kg of chemicals. All quite toxic and left unused due to interruption of production processes.
“Often they are abandoned, left somewhere, there is no landfill for hazardous waste to collect, so as not to mix with urban waste, it is a flaw. It was planned in 2005 but it was not built “said Besnik Bare, chemist.
In addition to these significant amounts of chemical waste from laboratories, hundreds of tons of other hazardous waste were inventoried that were used as raw material in the communist industries. In one part it was intervened between the years 2004-2012 with the support of foreign donations, but another part are still at the mercy of fate.
Referring to the national strategy for hazardous waste management, Albania currently has 18 hot spots, which urgently need intervention. At the top of the list is the Elbasan metal smelting complex, which is estimated to have 1.5–2 million tons of waste, followed by the Rrëshen copper mine, the Fushë-Arrëz copper mine area, the Pogradec ferronickel deposits in Guri i Kuq and in Bitinska.
Also hot spots are considered the areas of copper mining in Rehova, Kalimash, Gjegjan and oil extraction in Ballsh, Kuçova, Patos-Marinza where about 20,000 tons of oil are discharged into the surrounding environment.
