Top Story’s request to ISUV for the analysis of some samples is based on alarming concerns of field veterinarians about medical products that have active ingredients other than those contained in the label. One of the products for which we have received several denunciations is TOPANTIVIT produced by Chinese company. The drug is widely used in turkeys or poultry that supply the market.
“This preparation that you show has had many cases and problems in the market as young veterinary specialists rely on labels that show vitamin content, and have caused great damage. This preparation has another active ingredient from what the label indicates “said Ervin Resuli, Veterinarian. “When a drug is presented, it is presented with the basic substance that can be vitamins and at first sight they have no problem as they are supplements, and in content they really have no problem. But as an additional element they can have elements that pose a risk, here is the division of the problem “said Dritan Laçi, Professor of Veterinary Medicine.
The drug TOPANTIVIT is in the form of a yellow tablet and we have found it freely in pharmacies in Tirana, Durres, Lushnja and beyond. This bar is not certified by our authorities and here lies the first serious violation. So it should not have been in circulation. A farmer, whose identity we will not reveal for security reasons, has collaborated with Top Story by purchasing medicines in some random pharmacies. We first stop at a pharmacy in the Sauk area, in Tirana. There, the show’s collaborator seeks medicine for turkeys. What they offer are exactly some TOPANTIV tablets.
Farmer – What medicine, I have about 40 turkeys. Do you want these grains? Yes. I give you these grains. Make me some 40 grains. Yes.
Now, let’s look specifically at the medications the farmer bought.
Farmer-Now that I went to a veterinary pharmacy here in Tirana, I took a medicine, strepto or what they say. I also got 40 grains for turkey. Did you get them without a prescription? Without a prescription, I went inside.
We will move a few kilometers to Maminas, where the farmer is again looking for turkey grains. What is offered, is the same as in the first pharmacy.
Farmer-I have some turkeys, I need some medicine.
Pharmacist-What medicine?
Farmer – Grains, vitamins… How many turkeys do you have? 30 pieces.
Pharmacist- 30 pieces, do you need grains? Vitamin…
Pharmacist -From a grain of these, what weight do they have? They are 4-5 kilos. Then from two grains.
Based on the concerns of veterinarians, some of these tablets purchased in pharmacies that we showed but also in Durrës, Lushnje and beyond, we have sent to Italy for analysis of the active substance. The analyzes were performed in the laboratory “ION SOURCE & BIOTECHNOLOGIES SRL” located in Milan.
The sample was sent on November 11 and the response came out on November 19, 2021. The discovery from the analysis is shocking justifying the concerns expressed by veterinarians to Top Story.
The active substance contains dimetritazole and furazolidone. Both of these substances are strictly prohibited as they have been proven to have carcinogenic content. This document of the European Union is dated 27 July 1995 and announces the prohibition of the use of dimetritazole. The reason as underlined there is the carcinogenic content that is transmitted from the products to humans. So, a drug banned for 26 years is freely traded in Albania under the guise of another name.
“Dimetritazole is a banned drug since 1995 but strangely found in significant quantities not to mention tons for consumption. It is a product removed from the market for its carcinogenic properties, this causes damage to the consumer “said Ervin Resuli, Veterinarian.
