The chairman of the majority in the US Senate, Chuck Shumer, also commented during the ceremony of naming one of the streets in New York with the name of our National Hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu. He expressed gratitude to Albanians living in America, for the contribution they make there.
Shumer considers Albanians as hardworking people where he mentioned a case of an Albanian neighbor in the building where he lived, who initially worked as a guard and now has 8 apartments of his own. He promised that every day of his life he would support the Albanians and fight for them.
Chuck Shumer: In the 60s – 70s, all you wanted was to work hard, to spread your positive energies. Build a better life for yourself and your children. And you did it !! In the palace where I live we had a wonderful Albanian who worked as a guard and now he has 8 apartments of his own. This is the story of Albanians in America and to see this community grow and move forward on American soil gives confidence in New York. Today we are honoring someone who helped Albanians in the 15th century, shortly before I entered the senate (laughs). Anyway, it’s fantastic that you remember your story. The history of Albania is wonderful. Knowing that different countries, including large countries, wanted to submit to them, but in the end the Albanians and Albania have always won! Long live the Albanian community, long live all Albanians wherever they are. God bless you… And I will continue to fight for you in Washington every day of my life.
