June 25, 1992. In the early hours of the morning, the decision was made to hang the two brothers from Libofsha, Fier. Josif and Dritëbardh Çuko were hanged in the middle of the city of Fier.
The bodies were left hanging until the next evening, to be seen by the crowd of people who came and from other cities.
This was the last death sentence executed in our country. The two brothers in question had committed a heinous crime. Before one o’clock in the morning they entered an apartment to steal. There they killed all the family members.
On May 29, 1992, the two brothers entered to steal from the Pupa family home. They climbed to the window of the room where the 8-month-old baby slept. Initially, they killed 30-year-old Agim Pupa with an ax. Then, in the middle of the room, they hit his wife who was trying to leave.
The killers have gone to the parents’ room. They first tied up Agim’s mother and then killed his father. The cruel act continued by torturing mother Zejnepa to show where their money was. During this time little Magdalena cried incessantly, so they hit her with the lever behind her neck leaving her dead.
Mother Zejnepja was found in the early hours of the morning in the hallway of the house covered in blood. She died two hours later in hospital.
This would be the first horror event described as the “Libofsha Massacre” which would face public opinion. At the same time this event would mark the final death sentence. After this event and this decision, it seems to pave the way for other macabre crimes.
