A young woman who was set on fire last month on a public bus in Toronto, Canada, in a suspected racial hate crime, has died from her injuries, police said.
The incident follows a disturbing series of unprovoked crimes against foreigners or minorities.
The young woman in her 20s was on her way to work as a carer for the elderly on June 17, and was standing on the stopped bus in the west of the city when she was attacked without provocation by another passenger.
“The man is believed to have thrown a liquid substance at her and then lit it on fire, causing the female victim to catch fire,” Toronto police Inspector Alex Li said.
As the attacker fled the scene, employees and passengers rushed to help the girl by putting out the fire. She was then helped by firefighters and taken to hospital in serious condition. The police said at the time that the serious injuries were considerable.”
Police then arrested Tenzin Norbu, 33, and charged him with attempted murder and assault with a weapon.
Police called the attack an “isolated incident” and “random”, but after consultations with hate crime units said the crime was being investigated as hate-motivated.
At the beginning of the month, the victim’s sister wrote that she was suffering from “deep burns and is in critical condition”.
“My sister took care of others, but now she needs everyone’s help,” wrote the victim’s sister.
Police said yesterday that the woman died from her injuries and the case has been transferred to the homicide department.
The killing was the latest in a disturbing series on the city’s public transport system. In May, a woman was pushed onto the tracks as the train approached the station, but escaped with some injuries.
While a week before that, the 21-year-old foreign student Kartik Vasudev was killed outside a metro station while going to his ‘part-time’ job.
In April a 30-year-old man was stabbed in an unprovoked attack while waiting for a train on a subway platform.
In response to the developments, the police say they have increased patrols at public transport stations.
