Russia’s recent efforts to fill the media environment with untruths about Ukraine are part of an old model, the US embassy in Tirana said as it distributed a DASH statement.
The statement said that for many years, Russia has fabricated a series of false narratives that its disinformation and propaganda system constantly injects into the global information environment.
The Russian military and intelligence agencies are also engaged in this activity to influence the public to falsely believe that Ukraine, not Russia, is to blame for rising tensions in the region, the statement said.
There are five theories through which Russia is doing this, says DASH. The first is that Russia calls itself a victim in this story. Russia claims that the negative reaction of the international community to the occupation of an independent country was simply because people were afraid and hated Russia.
The second concerns the fact that when history does not align with the Kremlin’s political objectives, Russian government officials deny or distort historical events, such as when Putin published a distorted version of the outbreak of World War II.
Other false statements by Russia are that civilization in the west is heading for collapse, moving away from traditional values, or that already in Europe children instead of saying mother and father say, parent 1 and parent 2.
The Kremlin also finds it difficult to accept that all individuals should have the right to freedom of expression and that the government should be accountable to its people.
All this, says DASH, is aimed at manipulating the truth to suit the interests of the Kremlin.
