The chairman of the Socialist Party of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, declared that the opening of negotiations for Albania’s membership in the European Union will bring changes in the Albanian political class. From the Socialist Assembly of Unit 13, the mayor of Tirana said that the Socialist Party should be compared with the sister parties of the EU countries and not with Saliu’s party.
“We must be the party of 2023. Now that we have officially opened the negotiations with the EU, we are not compared to Saliu’s party, nor to baseball bats, but we will be compared to the sister parties that lead the EU countries”, emphasized Veliaj.
He expressed the belief that Albania will be able to fulfill all the tasks to advance in its European journey. “It has been an extraordinary week, where within one week, in our Albania, things have happened that we have dreamed about for years. We have just officially opened the negotiations to be members of the European Union. A dream of those who did not see democracy is becoming a reality. It will be our generation that will prove it, we will see that one of the strongest aspirations of our nation becomes a reality”, underlined Veliaj.
The President of the SP for Tirana said that under the socialist government, Albania is occupying an important place in the international arena. “In June, Albania was not only a member of the Security Council, but we had the Presidency of the Security Council. Finally, people look at Albania not as a small country with 2.8 million inhabitants, but as a country that punches above its weight. It may have a modest population, a modest economy, but a country that is run, as Edi runs Albania, as many of us run the countries where we are called to serve, can punch, can lift weights higher than its own weight. Today we are in this situation, where many of the things that seemed impossible to us have become reality”, he further added.
In his speech, Veliaj also focused on the government’s draft for “fiscal amnesty”. “The fight for the fiscal amnesty cannot be only for the prime minister and the Ministry of Finance. Tell me one of you here, who doesn’t have a relative abroad, who started life in emigration doing the hardest jobs!? As long as each of us has a connection with such a story, we do not need to have finished Economics-Finance to be a good government lawyer”, he said.
Touching on the situation of illegal constructions in the Dry Lake area, Veliaj emphasized that just as the Great Lake Park was freed with the demolition of 98 illegal constructions, so will Dry Lake be freed from the last two boils. “I heard about the latest hysteria, what’s going on at Dry Lake? One has put up a fence because he has a claim to the property. We are on trial with him. The gentleman has a claim to the property, as has another, which has made it like Venice inside Dry Lake. Even with that, we are in court to expropriate it, because there cannot be Venetian houses inside the lake, when in the meantime we want to civilize it”, explained Veliaj.
He announced that the Municipality of Tirana is determined to go to the end of its legal battles.
