After successive fires recorded in the Greek state, a little while ago the forest area of Porto Germenos in Attica was engulfed in flames.
Protothema.gr writes that currently 5 planes and 6 helicopters are operating from the air, 130 firefighters are fighting directly from the flames, as the wind makes their work difficult.
A few minutes ago, the order was given for the evacuation of Mytika settlement. “If you are in Mytika, evacuate now to Psatha. Forest fire in your area”, says a notice issued by the police. In the meantime, traffic has also been banned on some nearby roads.
Strong northwesterly winds blowing in the area are pushing the fire towards Psatha, while firefighters are making an effort to stop the spread.
According to the latest update from the Greek fire service, 130 firefighters are operating with 6 teams and 35 vehicles, including Romanian firefighters, as well as the S.mi.EA team. A team is in the area of the fire to investigate its causes. The staff of the Attica District Fire Services is on general alert.
“Unfortunately, the fire is progressing, but aerial vehicles are constantly dropping water and trying to contain it. At the moment it is located in a central point of the area, at a junction that goes to either Psatha or Porto Germeno. A settlement near Mytika has been evacuated as a precaution. We hope to reduce the spread even though it is a bit windy. The hilly country is difficult to cross, which makes extinguishing difficult. The fire is not going towards Porto Germenos but towards the east”, says the vice president for civil protection of Mandras municipality, Panagiotis Kolovenzos.
“We are fighting flames. Unfortunately, so far things are out of control. Superhuman efforts are being made to contain the fire. Civil defense does everything“, Kostas Makrynoris, the mayor of the Vilia municipality, told protothema.gr.
