Former Foreign Minister Arta Dade revealed this evening on “Top Story”, a short conversation with former American official Charles Wholch, during the protest of May 28, 1996.
Dade says that Wholch told her that they are watching every movement of that protest, that is, that they witnessed the violence against politicians and journalists.
Dad: In the dramatic crises that have occurred in Albania in the last 30 years, the American embassy has been very attentive. We remembered here the elections that were really a turning point, which had deviated from the democratic line. I remember that in the demonstration on May 28, the American embassy was following this protest from 15 floors. Then I asked Charles Wholch, what does the American institute mean, and he said wait, we’re watching. He witnessed the violence against journalists and politicians. I believe that this is also a turning point besides the fact that the political developments at that time were really significant. We were invited to the European Parliament in 1995 and have had about 15 meetings. The way the SP acted during the memorandum created a positive signal to partners in Europe and relations with the American administration became more frequent. This relationship has benefited Albania in its membership in the EU and NATO.
May 26, 1996 is one of the darkest days of democracy in Albania when arrogance and state violence destroyed the elections and robbed the vote massively.
Those elections were not recognized by OSCE/ODHIR observers who documented most of the manipulations. The mission at that time was led by the British Glover, who has come to Albania again. After the thefts, the socialist opposition withdrew the commissioners from the voting centers and in the end, surreal results emerged, when there were more votes than voters in the ballot box and they were all for the Democratic Party.
