The UK has begun withdrawing staff from its embassy in Ukraine amid warnings of a Russian invasion, suggesting that the risk of a war erupting is increasingly real.
British officials claim there have been no specific threats to diplomats, yet about half of the staff working in Kiev will return to London. The United States has also ordered relatives of its embassy staff to leave, saying an invasion could come “at any time.”
Washington’s move was viewed with skepticism in Kiev. Ukraine said it was “premature” for the US to withdraw its staff, calling it “an excessive precautionary measure”.
Russia has denied plans for military action, but tens of thousands of troops have gathered at the border. NATO member states, including Denmark, Spain, Bulgaria and the Netherlands, are sending bombers and warships to Eastern Europe to strengthen protection in the region.
With about 100,000 Russian troops now on the border with Ukraine, the NATO leader has warned that the risk of a new conflict on the old continent is growing. On Saturday, the United States sent about 90 tons of “lethal” aid to Ukraine, as they called it, which included large quantities of ammunition for the front line defenders.
