Prime Minister Edi Rama spoke at the reception organized on the occasion of the beginning of Albania’s mandate in the UN Security Council.
Edi Rama: Membership in the Security Council is an event of historical importance for Albania, which marks another cornerstone in our path of transformation to fulfill our aspirations as a nation and to contribute to making the world a better place for us and for all.
Let me start by going off-screen and bluntly saying it, despite the ambassador and others’ advice:
As if for nothing else but just a gathering like this, where so many distinguished friends and guests are present to share this moment with us, I guess the Security Council mandate is worth it.
Thank you for being here.
Only an unbridled imagination would have dared to dream of such a thing except three decades ago. I even doubt that even the most unbridled imagination could not have been so unbridled as to have dreamed of this three decades ago.
At that time, Albania was a bunker in the dark. For almost half a century, it crawled under one of the most oppressive communist regimes in Europe, which made our country, I must say, North Korea Europe.
The dictatorship collapsed thanks to the call of the people towards what for human nature is an inner need: freedom, equality, democracy and the rule of law.
Many times, the wheel of history moves in strange directions. For us Albanians, the awakening came quite late, but we kept our eyes on the light calling us and since then we have moved in a single direction, that of freedom, democracy, rule of law, human rights and dignity, development and reforms .
Since then, the search for the deserved place in the region and Europe has remained our compass, even in the most difficult moments on our difficult path towards a free and democratic society, towards the family we want to join, the European family of to which we belong.
