About 200,000 people risk losing their jobs in the Russian capital, Moscow, because Western companies have suspended their operations in Russia because of sanctions imposed on the invasion of Ukraine, said the mayor, Sergei Sobyanin.
Last week, Russian authorities approved a $ 41 million program to help employment in Moscow. The program is intended to provide training and temporary employment, Sobyanin said in a blog post.
Hundreds of Western companies have announced they will suspend their operations in Russia after the West imposed a series of sanctions packages against Moscow over its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
Sobyanin said the new program aims to support over 58,000 people who have lost their jobs as they worked for foreign companies. He added that 12,500 of them will be trained.
The mayor of Moscow said that the jobs that will be offered will include public works such as some city and other organizations.
Experts predict that the greatest economic impact of Western sanctions has not yet been felt in Russia, and they expect Moscow to enter a deep recession.
