Albania has continued to be supplied with wheat, but this year the war has changed the geography of imports and the prices at which we have secured it.
The first two months we were supplied by Russia and Ukraine, and then new countries entered
“We have had new contracts for a long time with countries like Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, thankfully France is also in the game”, said Adi Haxhiymeri, wheat importer.
But this market is not safe. After the war in Ukraine changed the game of doing trade.
“In such conditions there are neither buyers nor sellers who make long-term contracts, because they do not know what will happen to prices.”said Haxhiymeri.
The figures show that Albania has been supplied only from the last three months by Montenegro, a single month by Croatia and Romania.
Meanwhile, the constant remains Serbia, with which in April we received a record amount, almost 14 thousand 700 tons, which almost completely replaced the wheat imports from Russia and Ukraine.
Flour producer Avni Nela says that Albania has overcome the most difficult part of the supply, but at the beginning of 2023 we will face another challenge.
“In this period of time, the harvest of the country’s production will begin. “Until November, we work with the country’s crops.” said Avni Nela, flour producer.
“In the period after November, December, January then is the difficult part, because if we do not take from Russia, Ukraine does not know what kind of markets traders will enter. “This time I got Russian wheat through the French, only it comes at a higher price.”
In May, the country returned to wheat supplies from Russia, where it received 6,000 tonnes, while the rest was offset by Serbia and Montenegro.
