In the future everyone will be able to use a quick test to determine for themselves if they are infected with the Corona virus. Health Minister Spahn hopes the use of the tests will begin soon.
In Germany, it is for the first time that people are allowed to do their own tests to verify whether they are infected with the Corona virus or not. The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) announced that special approvals have been issued for three products. So far there are only rapid tests for a Corona virus infection, which are performed by trained medical staff. Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn told German television station ZDF that the tests could be purchased in stores in the future. Spahn thinks these tests could be put to use in the first week of March.
In all three types of tests so far, the evidence has been taken orally or by nose, said the Bonn-based institute. According to studies published by the manufacturers, these tests in the future could be done by people who are not experts or have not been trained for testing.
Almost 30 requests for special test approval
Before granting a special license for such tests, the Federal Institute checks not only their technical functioning. But the question also arises as to whether the test can be used safely by people who have not been trained to do so. This includes instructions and understandable explanations for everyone, how these tests work, it was said in advance. As of February 12, the Federal Institute has received about 30 applications for licensing and permission to use various tests.
The regular way of placing medical products on the market is determined by the CE through its certification bodies. Despite the special permits, the Federal Institute also expected further antigen tests for regular use.
Rapid tests and vaccines
In addition to vaccines rapid tests are one of the most important pillars in preventing the spread of pandemic. This issue has gained weight recently, following the rapid spread of the even more contagious variant of Corona, which was first discovered in the UK, but also due to the opening of kindergartens and schools.
Rapid tests for Corona virus have also been allowed to be used by non-medical staff after a training, from 2 February. Minister Spahn had initially announced that free rapid tests would be allowed from March 1 and that they could be done at testing centers, at the family doctor or at the pharmacy. But now it has been decided that the issue of rapid tests will be addressed at the next summit of Chancellor Merkel with the prime ministers of the states, which will be held on March 3./DW/
