A World Health Organization (WHO) expert has stated that the Omicron strain of coronavirus affects the upper body, and has announced that the WHO is monitoring a new strain that is said to have been discovered in France.
“We are seeing more and more studies showing that Omicron is infecting the upper body differently than others,” said Abdi Mahamud, WHO’s pandemic incident manager.
Speaking at a news conference, Mahamud explained that the Omicron type is different from others that affect the lungs and have “caused severe pneumonia”. “We had a good number of studies proving again… from South Africa that vaccines still protect you against hospitalization, serious illness and death,” said the WHO doctor.
As he said, the challenge has not been the vaccine, but for the vaccination to reach the vulnerable population. Asked about a new type of coronavirus reported in France, Mahamud said, “The B1640 has been under our radar since November and we have seen it up close.”
The WHO doctor was asked if it was prudent to consider developing a new rapidly spreading Omicron vaccine. “It is difficult to predict where Omicroni will get from here. “Therefore, it is still too early to make such a decision on this issue,” said Mahamud.
