Libya’s House of Representatives (parliament) has proposed postponing the country’s presidential election by six months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The assembly held a session in the eastern city of Tobruk late Monday to discuss the elections, which were scheduled to take place on December 24th.<\/p>\n
The incumbent parliament speaker, Fawzi Al-Nuwairi, presented several proposals from MPs for the election, one of which called for a six-month postponement of the vote.<\/p>\n
Last week, Libya’s Supreme National Election Commission proposed postponing the December 24 vote by a month, citing obstacles to holding elections on time.<\/p>\n
Al-Nuwairi asked the election commission to provide an explanation of the compelling reasons that prevented the election from taking place.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the incumbent speaker said parliament would ask the Presidency Council and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to restrict the movement and visits of foreign ambassadors to Libya, without further details.<\/p>\n
On Friday, European countries and the US urged Libyan authorities to set a final date for the election without delay.<\/p>\n
