A poor Indian woman claiming to be the heiress of the dynasty that built the Taj Mahal is seeking to be granted ownership of the imperial palace in New Delhi.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
“I hope that today, tomorrow or anytime, I will be given what belongs to me. “God willing, I will take it,” said Sultana Begum, claiming to come from the line of former Mughal emperors.<\/p>\n
Begum lives in an old two-room clay hut on the outskirts of Calcutta, and survives on a small state pension.<\/p>\n
Among her modest possessions are memories of her marriage to Mirza Mohammad Bedar, whom she says is the great-grandson of the last Mughal ruler.<\/p>\n
Her husband’s death in 1980 left her in difficult survival conditions, but for years she has not given up on claims for compensation.<\/p>\n
“Can you imagine the descendant of the one who built the Taj Mahal living in these conditions?” The 68-year-old said in an interview with AFP. Begum has filed a lawsuit in court to be recognized as the heiress of the massive 17th-century Red Fort in New Delhi.<\/p>\n
The castle was once the seat of power of the Mughal dynasty.<\/p>\n
Her claims have been backed by royal sympathizers but without the power needed to raise her voice.<\/p>\n
The woman says her husband belongs to the bloodline of the last Indian god Bahadur Shah Zafar.
Zafar came to power in 1837, at a time when western Mughal had shrunk much since the conquest of India by British colonizers.<\/p>\n
