In Albania, December saw a drop in both new cases and Covid casualties 19.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Official figures processed by VOA show that there were 10,533 infected throughout the month, the lowest level since July. Compared to November, it is a decrease of 28.3 percent. The daily average was 339 affected.<\/p>\n
The contraction of new cases has come as the tests increased slightly by 3.6 percent, climbing to the quota of 90,540 tampons, or an average of 2920 tests per day. As a result, the positivity (ratio between new cases and tests) dropped to 11.6 percent, or 5.1 percentage points less. Positivity is an indicator of virus transmission in the community.<\/p>\n
During December, the first two cases of the Omicron variant were confirmed.<\/p>\n
Deaths also marked a significant decline. In total, 117 victims were recorded last month, or 31.2 percent less than in November. This is the lowest level of the last four months. The highest number of lost lives was recorded in the third week (December 14-20) with 32 victims, while December 15, was the day with the most deaths, 8 citizens who had lost their lives.<\/p>\n
In hospitals the situation also improved. While on November 30 there were 169 patients of which 15 in intensive therapy, on the last day of December hospitalized there were 90 people of whom 10 in critical condition.<\/p>\n
At the end of last month, across the country there were 6419 cases still active, or 275 less compared to the end of November.<\/p>\n
Even compared to December 2020, the situation is also better, with 9 thousand cases and 247 deaths less. A year ago, positivity was at extremely worrying quotes, at 27.3 percent. Even active cases are more than three times less. At the end of December 2020, there were 23,448 people still found to be affected by the virus.<\/p>\n
But the last days of last month and those of early January, seem to be showing a deteriorating trend. During the last week (December 28-January 3) new cases jumped by 68.8 percent more, reaching the figure of 3343 infected.<\/p>\n
Part of the increase is due to the fact that the tests were also more numerous, +21.9 percent. But still, the highest level of positivity, +3.5 percentage points more, reaching the level of 12.5 percent, proves a panorama that does not correspond to the performance of recent weeks.<\/p>\n
In the last three days there has also been a slight deterioration of the situation in hospitals, where from 31 December to 3 January, there are 20 more patients, or 110 hospitalized of whom 15 are in critical condition. In contrast, over the past week the number of deaths fell to a total of 21 victims, from 29 lives lost in the previous week.\/VOA<\/p>\n
