By openly challenging China, Taiwan bought the entire shipment of more than 20,000 bottles of Lithuanian rum which Beijing blocked, barring it from entering Chinese territory, reports the South China Morning Post.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
For months, China has frozen trade with Lithuania following Vilnius’ decision to allow Taiwan to open a de facto embassy in November. Beijing claims that Taiwan is part of China, while the island considers itself untouchable. <\/p>\n
China, which often pressures nations to accept that Taiwan is part of it, said in December that Lithuania would end up in the “rubbish bin of history” if it did not change its mind.
But after learning that Chinese authorities had blocked imports of 20,400 bottles of dark rum produced by Lithuanian company MV Group Production, Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor – which is owned by the country’s finance ministry – Taiwan bought the entire shipment. <\/p>\n
“Lithuania supports us and we support Lithuania – let’s raise a toast to this”, were the comments of the Taiwanese leadership which did not officially declare the purchase, but after that, the island’s national development council posted a graphic presenting cocktail-based recipes rum and foods that can be cooked with rum. <\/p>\n
