French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has expressed optimism about reviving the nuclear deal with Iran, but has warned that “time is running out” for international negotiators.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
“I continue to believe that we can reach an agreement. “Some progress has been made in recent days,” Le Drian told BFM television.<\/p>\n
“We have started in a positive direction in recent days, but time is of the essence, because unless an agreement is reached quickly, we will have nothing to negotiate about.”<\/p>\n
The United States, which pulled out of the deal in 2018 and reinstated sanctions on the Iranian leadership, said this week that “modest progress” had been made in a round of talks that began on January 3.<\/p>\n
Talks began late last year after a break in which Iran’s new president, Ebrahim Raisi, was elected.<\/p>\n
Since the withdrawal of the US from the agreement, Iran has started to gradually disregard the agreement.<\/p>\n
Iranian authorities are insisting that the United States lift all sanctions before returning to the deal.<\/p>\n
Western leaders, who have called for the agreement to be implemented, have resisted specific deadlines, but have warned that there are “weeks, not months” left to reach an agreement.<\/p>\n
Iran has consistently denied allegations by Israel and the West that it is developing nuclear-capable weapons.<\/p>\n
