American surgeons, on January 7, successfully transplanted the heart of a genetically modified pig into a human body.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The rare intervention was discussed this Sunday in the “Square Circle”, where Alfred Cako was seldom on the side of science. He described the transplant as very good news for humanity.<\/p>\n
“The transition from one species to another has no name as it is the first case and we will simply call it transplant. Transplants have been talked about since the second century BC, when skin interventions were made with doctors who have been.<\/em><\/p>\n But transplantation from an animal to a human has not happened and it is a great achievement if it continues successfully. That’s the good news. In America 17 people die every day waiting to have their heart replaced and have no chance<\/em>“, Said Cako.<\/p>\n The operation was performed on a patient who could not perform a normal transplant and was on the verge of death.<\/p>\n The heart has been of a pig, whose genes have been altered to eliminate a gene that produces a type of sugar, which would trigger rejection by the human body. Doctors have also given some additional medication to the patient, in order to stop the immune system from reacting to the organ.<\/p>\n The biotechnology company, Revivicor, which donated the pig’s heart, also offered a pig’s kidney in October, to perform the first kidney transplant of an animal into a human, even though the patient’s brain was dead.<\/p>\n The operation was performed in New York.
