A delegation of Taliban and Western diplomats are expected to meet today in Oslo for talks on the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and human rights.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Closed-door discussions will be held between a delegation of 15 Taliban members and representatives of the United States, France, Britain, Germany, Italy, the European Union and Norway.<\/p>\n
These discussions are expected to focus on the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, which has deteriorated drastically since the Taliban took power, REL reports.<\/p>\n
The Taliban delegation is expected to seek access to billions of dollars in frozen assets after the Taliban took power in Afghanistan last August as US-led forces withdrew from the country.
Afghanistan is facing a worsening humanitarian crisis, as 22.8 million people are facing scarce food supplies and 8.7 million people are on the brink of starvation, the United Nations has said.<\/p>\n
Since August, international aid, which financed about 80 percent of the Afghan budget, has been suspended and the United States has frozen $ 9.5 billion in assets of the Afghan Central Bank. Unemployment has risen, while civil servants have not been paid for months.<\/p>\n
“We are urging them to stop freezing Afghan assets and not to punish ordinary Afghan citizens for political discourse,” said Taliban delegation member Shafiullah Azam.<\/p>\n
“Because of the hunger, because of the deadly winter, I believe it is time for the international community to support the Afghans and not punish them for their political differences,” he said.<\/p>\n
January 23 in Oslo, Norway was the first day of talks between the Taliban delegation. They talked to members of civil society on the topic of human rights.<\/p>\n
