After the first 22-hour marathon investigation, two owners of a nursing home in Chania, Crete, and two doctors were jailed Sunday morning for the so-called “medieval scandal” at a nursing home that had been turned into a prison of torture and death for dozens of people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
There are at least 7 people accused by the 37 employees there, who are being questioned on charges of abuse of owners, but also of medical staff in the nursing home and now Greek authorities are investigating at least 30 deaths out of 293 that have occurred, since 2015 as well as for 8 attempted murders.<\/p>\n
It is learned that the police found evidence for several million euros in the wills of the elderly who died and according to the accusations for 12 years the accused did not hesitate to lead to the death of the elderly who were in this care unit in order to steal the money.<\/p>\n
Police investigations have shown that the accused went so far as not to feed the elderly, leave them without bread, or give them away quickly until they often led them to drowning. Also staff rarely washed their clothes and care for hygiene and cleanliness issues was lacking almost daily.<\/p>\n
Often for twenty-four hours they tied the elderly to wheelchairs or to their beds, giving them strong sedatives so that they had no contact with the environment. Despite these nightmares, there is evidence that the elders of this asylum have been victims of physical violence by the employees themselves.<\/p>\n
While the “key” person turned out to be the doctor who signed the death certificates for the same reason – heart attack. Police estimate that this network has also circulated prescriptions with medicines worth over 3 million euros, while after the searches of the houses of the detainees, sums of money and gold rings were found, which are not excluded to belong to the elderly.<\/p>\n
The seven defendants, including a mother and daughter who own an asylum, face charges of repeatedly forming and participating in a criminal organization and intentional homicide. The scandal began to unfold last April, following complaints from some former employees, while investigations began and even the exhumation of the dead elderly was ordered.<\/p>\n
