Outside of planet Earth, the Americans and Russians function as one team, the opposite of what has been happening for weeks now.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
An American astronaut will now return to Earth. It was initially thought that Mark Vande Hei, who has been in space for 355 days, could be left in space due to increased tensions over the Russian occupation of Ukraine.<\/p>\n
But it has been confirmed that he will travel by a Russian ship to Kazakhstan, according to the BBC.<\/p>\n
Both the American and two other Russian cosmonauts will return.<\/p>\n
Joel Montalbano, NASA’s ISS program manager, said: “I can tell you for sure that Mark is coming home. We are in communication with our Russian colleagues. There is no doubt about that. “<\/p>\n
He admitted that the astronauts were aware of what was happening around them in the world, but they still work as a “team”.<\/p>\n
Dmitry Rogozin, head of Russia’s Roscosmos Space Agency, had previously warned of sanctions causing technical problems at the ISS, but Mr Montalbano said it had continued to operate smoothly.<\/p>\n
“All these activities have continued for 20 years and nothing has changed in the last three weeks. “Our control centers function successfully, without flaws, without problems,” he said.<\/p>\n
The US controls the energy on board the ISS and Russia controls the travel part.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month on Russian state television, Mr Rogozin announced that Roscosmos would suspend US missile sales in response to sanctions against Russia.<\/p>\n
Vande Hei, 55, has spent 355 days in space, a new record in the US.<\/p>\n
