Most of the more than 1,000 people sheltered in the Mariupol theater, hit the day before by Russian bombs, have survived, says a Ukrainian MP.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Although the building was destroyed, the vast majority of civilians hiding in its basement miraculously escaped the attack. “We do not yet know exactly whether there were any killed or injured, but most of the people there managed to survive,” said lawmaker Dmytro Guri.<\/p>\n
Two large writings on Earth near the theater, saying, “There are children here,” were to serve as a warning to Russian forces. The word “child” was written in large white letters in Russian in front of and behind the building, but Moscow forces did not stop in front of it either.<\/p>\n
The Russian Defense Ministry, however, claimed that its forces had not hit the theater, but blamed the Azov battalion, a Ukrainian far-right paramilitary unit, for saying it had blown up the building. The event was immediately condemned by the international community, as President Joe Biden for the first time labeled Putin a “war criminal.”<\/p>\n
His statement was also backed by Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Przydacz, who told the BBC that Putin fully deserved such a designation. “In my opinion, the initial plan was to destroy the military infrastructure,” Przydacz said. “The Kremlin believed that the Ukrainian government would somehow evaporate. This has not happened.<\/p>\n
Ukrainians are very brave in defending their land and values, their democracy, the state they have built in the last 30 years. “Now Putin has decided to strike at civilian infrastructure,” he said. Even British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has said that “there is strong evidence” that Russian President Vladimir Putin is a “war criminal”.<\/p>\n
