Lia Thomas won the 500-meter freestyle race at the competition in Atlanta, USA last week, becoming the first transgender woman of the American College Competition (NCAA), a highly respected title in the USA.

She defeated Emma Weyant of Florida by 1.75 seconds but Florida Gov. DeSantis refused to recognize her as the winner, awarding the Weyant trophy, arguing that “ideology cannot be put ahead of opportunities for female athletes.”

Governor DeSantis said Thomas’s victory “undermined the integrity of the competition and that the NCAA Sports Association by allowing it to compete as a ‘woman’ is destroying women’s athletics.”

“They are crowning someone else as women champions and that is wrong. “They put the ideology before the opportunity for female athletes and I think people are just afraid to talk about what they are doing.”

The U.S. Swimming Society has recently allowed transgender athletes (born men and later converted to women or vice versa) to compete at even the highest levels.

Thomas, who competed for the University of Pennsylvania, previously swam for three seasons as a man before launching replacement therapy in 2019.
