Russia has suffered “significant troop losses,” admitted President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman for the first time since the war began.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Dmitry Peskov was asked on Sky News if the war had been a defeat for them, given that Russia had withdrawn from the capital Kiev, lost thousands of troops and that President Volodymyr Zelensky was still in power.<\/p>\n
In an attempt not to accept this as a failure, Peskov said: “Yes, we have significant loss of troops and this is a great tragedy for us.”<\/p>\n
He further added that the withdrawal from the Kiev region and the northern city of Chernihiv was an “act of goodwill” to reduce tensions during the peace talks.<\/p>\n
During the interview, Peskov reiterated Russia’s reasons for describing it as a “special military operation”, saying that Ukraine had become “anti-Russian” and Russia was nervous as NATO “began to move towards their borders”.<\/p>\n
Russia has previously said 1351 soldiers were killed.<\/p>\n
The exact number of dead is not known, but a NATO official was quoted in the American media as saying that the number of Russian casualties is between 7,000 to 15,000 killed.<\/p>\n
