The West has often accused Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of being the right-hand man of Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. And in fact the Kremlin launched its attack on Ukraine from Belarus on February 24th.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
However, Lukashenko has refused to be called an “accomplice of the aggressor” in this serious conflict, writes the British Metro.co.uk<\/p>\n
The president has already openly told the world that Belarus has sent troops to Ukraine, arguing for the release of “drivers” trapped there.<\/p>\n
He told the state-run Belta news agency: “It got to the point where that rubbish was catching our people there, mostly drivers\u2026 who happened to be there at the time.”<\/p>\n
“I warned the Ukrainians that we would be forced to carry out an operation to liberate our people. “In fact, we carried out such an operation and released our people.”<\/p>\n
Despite the statement, Lukashenko condemned the West for putting him in a group with Putin.<\/p>\n
He also complained that Belarus was not getting involved enough, and argued that his country had every reason to help end the conflict.<\/p>\n
Mr Lukashenko said: “There can be no negotiations without Belarus. “You brought us to this situation, the western countries, and of course Belarus’s position must be heard in the talks.”<\/p>\n
“We can not get into a basket with Russia, this war is behind our fence and is affecting the situation in Belarus. “Therefore there can be no special agreements behind Belarus.”<\/p>\n
The development comes as Russian forces continue to withdraw from the northern parts of Ukraine to focus on the eastern areas of the country.<\/p>\n
Experts say this is being done to save soldiers’ lives by focusing resources on specific areas and cities.<\/p>\n
