The Canadian Parliament has voted to declare Beijing treating Uighurs as genocide, hours after China claimed that the treatment of this minority group is a “shining example” of progress in the field of human rights.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
This point, which states that Uighurs in China “have been and are subject to genocide,” was adopted unanimously on 22 February.<\/p>\n
The Canadian Parliament has also voted to pass an amendment requiring the transfer of the Winter Olympics from Beijing if China continues to treat Uighurs the same.<\/p>\n
Relations between China and Canada have been strained in recent years and the move is expected to further escalate the situation.<\/p>\n
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said last week that there had been significant reports of abuses in Xinjiang, with human rights groups believing that at least 1 million Uighurs and other Muslim minorities were imprisoned in camps.<\/p>\n
