Before arriving in Ukraine, Guterres was in Russia, where he spoke with President Vladimir Putin about the current state of the war.<\/p>\n<p>During a press conference in Kiev, Guterres demanded that evacuation corridors be opened in Mariupol, stressing that trapped civilians must be rescued urgently.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The people of Mariupol are in desperate need of such an approach.  Mariupol is a crisis within the crisis.  Thousands of civilians need help to save lives.  &#8220;Many elderly people need medical care or have limited mobility, they need a way out of the apocalypse.&#8221;<\/em>said Guterres.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I was moved by the resilience and bravery of the people of Ukraine.  My message to them is simple: We will not give up.<\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UN?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@UN<\/a> will redouble its efforts to save lives and reduce human suffering.
