The UN Security Council on Friday unanimously approved its first statement on Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in February, supporting the Secretary-General’s efforts to find a “peaceful solution” to the war.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The statement, drafted by Norway and Mexico and seen by AFP, did not support a mediation attempt by Antonio Guterres, as set out in an earlier version of the text.<\/p>\n
“The Security Council expresses its deep concern over the maintenance of peace and security in Ukraine.”<\/em> was stated in the text adopted on Friday.<\/p>\n Juan Ramon de la Fuente, Mexico’s ambassador to the UN, told the media:<\/p>\n “The ratification of the declaration shows that the Security Council is united in its support for the United Nations and its Secretary-General in finding a diplomatic solution. Both our countries continue to call for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Since this statement was adopted, it shows at least a willingness to move in that direction. As we have said, this is a very initial first step.
