The former head of South Africa’s intelligence has accused the country’s president Cyril Ramaphosa of kidnapping and bribery, in the case he has filed with the police.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Arthur Fraser says the case concerns the attempted theft of $ 4 million on one of the president’s properties in 2020 and subsequent attempts to conceal what happened.<\/p>\n
Ramaphosa denies the allegations, saying the case “has no basis for criminal conduct.”<\/p>\n
Fraser is considered in the country as one of the allies of the country’s former president Jacob Zuma.<\/p>\n
Critics say the conflict is linked to clashes between the leadership of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party ahead of the race for the new presidency in December.<\/p>\n
Police have confirmed that a case has been filed with them and a “full process will follow”.<\/p>\n
Fraser, who headed the State Security Agency (SSA) from 2016 to 2018, said he submitted photos, bank details and video footage to police.<\/p>\n
In the statement he says criminals had broken into a property in Limpopo province in February 2020 to steal more than $ 4 million. They were apprehended and interrogated later, when they were ordered not to tell the man about what had happened.<\/p>\n
In a response, Ramaphosa’s office confirmed that there had been a robbery on his farm in Limpopo “where money raised from the sale of animals had been stolen”.<\/p>\n
Fraser himself has been accused of bribery by witnesses on a corruption commission, but he has denied the allegations.<\/p>\n
Before becoming president in 2014, Ramaphosa was a well-known businessman with shares in media, telecommunications, food and beverage companies.<\/p>\n
