‘Beach bars’ and restaurants frequented on Italy’s beaches are preparing for a radical change of rules as banker Draghi’s government says it will grant concession permits in tenders from 2024.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
For many beach operators the scenario is frightening as the licenses have so far been passed down by another generation.<\/p>\n
But the government says it is an opportunity to give everyone an equal chance.<\/p>\n
Most of Italy’s spectacular beaches are private, but authorities say their management is not transparent.<\/p>\n
That is why the government of the technical prime minister Dragi says that it seeks to bring to light any uncertainties in the management of this sector.<\/p>\n
Italy’s 7,500-kilometer coastline is littered with private beaches and sunbeds of one color, with only a few small “free” beaches in between.<\/p>\n
Beach permits have been automatically renewed with small fees for owners since the 1990s, but the government wants to change that.<\/p>\n
Following pressure from the EU, Draghi’s government has agreed to award the beaches with public tenders from 2024, although it is unclear how potential losers will be compensated.
The representative of the beach operators, Maurizio Rustignoli, said that the uncertainty created by the government is “unacceptable”.
“Operators are afraid of irregularities and corruption in public tenders. “If it was done seriously, it could be right,” he added.<\/p>\n
