Cuba has convicted 381 people of participating in rare anti-government protests last summer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Some of them have been sentenced to up to 25 years in prison.<\/p>\n
The Prosecutor General’s Office said that 297 people were sentenced to prison for crimes such as: insurgency, public unrest, attacks and robbery.<\/p>\n
Among the convicts are 16 young people aged 16 to 18 years.<\/p>\n
A small number of people have been offered job opportunities for the community.<\/p>\n
The United States and the EU have in the past criticized the trials in Cuba, citing a lack of transparency.<\/p>\n
Thousands of Cubans took part in the protests, on the island led by the communist regime, shouting “freedom”.<\/p>\n
The protests, among the largest in decades, erupted after the severe economic crisis, and some protesters had raised their voices for rising prices and shortages of food and medicine.<\/p>\n
Unauthorized public organizations are illegal in Cuba, so more than 1,000 people have been arrested.<\/p>\n
In some images posted on social media at the time, security forces were seen beating and spraying pepper spray on protesters.<\/p>\n
In 2021, Cuban President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel blamed the United States – which has had strained relations with Cuba for decades – for the unrest.<\/p>\n
He had claimed that the protesters were mercenaries paid to destabilize the state.<\/p>\n
