The European Union received 648,000 applications last year for international protection, the EU Asylum Agency said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
This figure is higher by a third of that of 2020.<\/p>\n
Afghans and Syrians make up the largest groups of applicants.<\/p>\n
In addition, the European bloc has received about 3.4 million requests for temporary protection from people fleeing Russia’s war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n
The EU agency has said that a total of about six million people have fled the Russian occupation, although one of them has returned to Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Syrians have made about 117.00 applications while Afghans 102,000, forwarded by citizens of Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey and Bangladesh.<\/p>\n
Their key destinations are: France, Germany, Italy and Spain.<\/p>\n
Half of all applicants were in the 18-34 age group, and about 70 percent of them were men.<\/p>\n
The EU has said it has accepted asylum or protection applications from 185,000 people.<\/p>\n
Residents of Eritrea had the highest acceptance rate – 81 percent – while residents of Georgia had the lowest – three percent.<\/p>\n
About 770,000 decisions are still pending, the agency said.<\/p>\n
