Scientists have recently discovered a carnivorous plant that feeds on underground creatures such as worms, grubs and beetles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
This plant was discovered in the Indonesian province of North Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo.<\/p>\n
Like other plants Nepenthes pudica has modified leaves, otherwise known as traps that manage to collect their food.<\/p>\n
What makes this plant strange is where it lives and how it finds underground creatures.<\/p>\n
According to CNN, researchers have stated that this species can consume creatures up to 11 centimeters long.<\/p>\n
This discovery is important for nature conservation in Indonesian Borneo, which is a biodiversity hotspot.<\/p>\n
“We hope that the discovery of this unique carnivorous plant can help protect Bornean rainforests, especially prevent or at least slow down the conversion of pristine forests to oil palm plantations.”<\/em> said Wewin Tjiasmanto, who helped discover the new species.<\/p>\n
