State media in North Korea today justified the late spread of the virus in their country with “alien-style techniques” \u2014 including the release of virus-filled balloons from South Korea.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Media in the communist hermit kingdom said authorities had discovered hotspots in the southern city of Ipho near the border with South Korea, which they said had spread to other cities.<\/p>\n
Although the theory may seem ridiculous, it is not very different from the mutual accusations between countries for the spread, at the beginning of the infamous pandemic.<\/p>\n
The North Korean center said an 18-year-old soldier and a 5-year-old child had contacted “alien objects” in the eastern city of Kumgang and then tested positive for the dreaded Omicron variant.<\/p>\n
In what officials called an “emergency instruction,” prevention centers were ordered to “be alert to ‘alien objects’ coming from the sky or wind, such as balloons or other phenomena that can be disguised as ‘climate-related.’<\/p>\n
The recommendation did not specify what the “alien objects” were, but the blame has often been put on balloon activities in South Korea, which the North’s government says are instigated by Northern dissidents.<\/p>\n
The country had remained virus-free for two years, but suddenly on May 12 admitted to infecting an unspecified number of people in Penian who were diagnosed with Omicron.<\/p>\n
North Korea already says it has about 4 million infected out of its population of 26 million, and adds that 73 people have died.<\/p>\n
Previously, the issue of balloons between the two countries was the subject of conflict over the distribution of southern anti-communist propaganda leaflets.<\/p>\n
In previous statements, North Korea has said that the virus can be spread by migratory birds.<\/p>\n
