Two children and an adult have died of starvation in South Sudan after the suspension of food aid by UN organizations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
It comes after the UN’s World Food Program (WFP) said it had suspended rationing programs in some parts of the country due to a lack of funds.<\/p>\n
In June, the body said it needed $426 million (\u00a3352 million) to continue distributing food.<\/p>\n
But that help has not come as the international community has focused on other crises, including the ongoing war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n
According to the BBC, in the statement given by an employee at the camp, it is said that one of the victims was a five-year-old child.<\/p>\n
“I find the mother of one of the children sitting by the small grave of her five-year-old son. Her three other children, all very thin and frail, sit at the entrance to the family’s makeshift shelter.”<\/em> said employee Sami Al Subaihi.<\/p>\n He added that more than 20,000 people living in displacement camps were at risk of starvation.<\/p>\n “In a camp I see people who are exhausted. Clearly they haven’t had enough food for a while. I don’t see anyone cooking or any food stored in any of the shelters.”<\/em> he further added.<\/p>\n This suspension spread to different regions of the country and more than 60% of the population of 11 million people now face food insecurity.<\/p>\n South Sudan has been wracked by violence since gaining independence in 2011 and this has contributed to food insecurity, despite the formation of a unity government in 2020.<\/p>\n The situation has also been worsened by four consecutive seasons of flooding that have destroyed homes and farmland, displacing thousands of people.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \n<\/p>\n top channel
