The alliance, the general stressed, has a strategic interest in the region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>He denounced at the same time Russia&#8217;s &#8220;illogical and brutal war&#8221; in Ukraine as well as its &#8220;aggressive and malicious influence on the Western Balkans&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We have a strategic interest in the Western Balkans.  I want to send a message of hope to all the people there that in the end we will all find ourselves in the European and Euro-Atlantic family.  I welcome the decisions of NATO member states in the region, which have increased defense spending as a natural reaction to Russian aggressiveness.  NATO will defend all allies and every square inch of their territory.&#8221;<\/em>&#8211; said Mircea Geoana<\/p>\n<p>Albania, Croatia, Montenegro and North Macedonia are already members of NATO.  While Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina are partners.<\/p>\n<p>After the beginning of the Russian aggression in Ukraine, the heads of Kosovo&#8217;s institutions announced that the country will apply for membership in the Partnership for Peace, which is considered the first step in the process towards NATO membership.<\/p>\n<p>Even before Geoana, they taught the idea that membership is the best guarantee for peace.
