At least 24 people have been killed when a passenger bus veered off a bridge and plunged about 45 meters into a river valley in Kenya.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The serious and unexplained accident has so far been attributed to brake system failure, although this is a very rare occurrence according to experts.<\/p>\n
The Modern Coast company bus was traveling from Meru to the port city of Mombasa when it went off the Nithi bridge, writes the local Daily Nation and Standard.<\/p>\n
Senior police official Rono Bunei said that the vehicle “must have suffered brake failure as it was at high speed when the incident occurred”.<\/p>\n
Police Commissioner Nobert Komora: “It is with sadness that we announce the death of 24 people in a horrific accident at the infamous Nithi River bridge on the Meru-Nairobi highway.”<\/p>\n
Harrowing footage from the scene shows the serious consequences of the crash and the completely destroyed bus.<\/p>\n
It is not clear how many people were traveling on the bus at the time of the crash, but authorities have confirmed 24 deaths so far.<\/p>\n
The event comes amid several serious accidents in the East African country.<\/p>\n
On July 8, 20 people were killed in a serious accident on the highway from the capital Nairobi to the coastal city of Mombasa.<\/p>\n
