Zsuzsa Hegedus, member of the close circle of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, has resigned after he has positioned himself against “peoples of mixed race”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Hegedus, who has known the nationalist Orban for 20 years, described the speech as “pure Nazi text”, according to Hungarian media.<\/p>\n
The International Auschwitz Committee for Holocaust Survivors has considered the speech as “dangerous”.<\/p>\n
Orban’s spokesman said that the media had misinterpreted the comments.<\/p>\n
Orban gave the speech on Saturday in a region of Romania that has a large Hungarian community.<\/p>\n
He said that European peoples should be free to join each other, but mixing with non-Europeans creates “a world of mixed races”.<\/p>\n
“We have the will to mix with each other, but we do not want to become peoples of mixed races”, he said.<\/p>\n
Orban’s stance against migration is already known, but for Hegedus, Saturday’s speech crossed the line.<\/p>\n
Orban has also spoken about the war in Ukraine, saying that the West’s support for this country has failed, sanctions against Russia are not working and that a peace deal should be a priority.<\/p>\n
Despite receiving large amounts of European funding, Orb\u00e1n’s Hungarian government frequently clashes with the European Union on issues related to the rule of law, such as migration and media rights.<\/p>\n
In the past, Orban has enjoyed good relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and is the only EU leader to publicly criticize Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.<\/p>\n
